What Is Animal Communication & How I’m Sure It’s Real
A personal essay for the curious, the skeptical,
and anyone who’s ever felt understood by an animal.
You don’t have to believe in animal communication to recognize the way animals already speak to you.
Let’s go way, way back.
Remember being a kid and having an imaginary friend?
Or having full-on conversations with your dog — telling him about your day at school, the bully on the playground, the crush who didn’t notice you? Maybe you waved frantically at cows and horses out the car window and that little stretch of farmland was the best part of your day.
Or maybe none of that rings a bell — and that’s okay, too. Truly.
Stick with me for a minute.
Because whether you remember it or not, most of us came into this world already connecting with animals beyond spoken words.
And if you’re reading this with a raised eyebrow — curious but skeptical — you’re exactly who I’m writing to.
So… what is animal communication?
At its core, animal communication is a telepathic, intuitive form of connection where animals share information with humans (and other animals) through:
imagery
physical sensations
emotions
thoughts or “knowings”
words, phrases, or even songs
It’s not spooky. It’s not performative. It’s not fake. And it’s definitely not animals suddenly speaking English.
It’s subtler than that.
Here’s what that can look like in real life:
Imagery
Visuals in your mind’s eye — sometimes a quick snapshot, sometimes a little movie clip.
Sensations
Something you feel in your body: a tight shoulder, an achy knee, a flutter in your chest.
Thoughts / Knowings
Information that just arrives. Fully formed. And you know — deeply — it didn’t originate from within you.
Emotions
Happiness. Sadness. Nervousness. Peace. Grief.
Words, phrases, or songs
This one makes me laugh because animals love to use whatever they know you’ll recognize. For me, it’s often music. (Yes, sometimes hilariously on-the-nose.)
How does it actually work?
Animals share information in the way they know the human on the receiving end is most likely to understand.
They’re brilliant like that.
And the intuitive person acting as the “channel” receives it in the way they are most fluent. There’s a collaboration happening — not a performance.
I was trained in Soul Level Animal Communication by Danielle MacKinnon and one of the foundational teachings is this:
Animals already communicate this way.
They use intuition every day — to sense danger, find food, navigate relationships, and stay alive. When we connect with them telepathically, we’re not asking them to do something new or special.
We’re just meeting them where they already are.
Still skeptical? Totally fair.
(Seriously. You don’t need to believe anything here.)
Let’s ground this.
Your animal knows their name, right?
They respond to cues. They anticipate routines. They wait by the door before you get home. They somehow know when you’re sad — even if you haven’t said a word.
Animals don’t actually speak English (or any human language). They understand us through tone, emotion, energy, imagery, and intention.
Which is… telepathy.
Yes, there’s behavior and conditioning involved — but the deeper understanding? That’s intuitive.
They meet us where we can understand them. And honestly, that’s part of the magic.
(I could talk about how pure and otherworldly animals are for days… but I’ll save that spiral for another post.)
Common questions I get all the time before I do an AC Reading with somebody:
Does my pet need to be in the same room as me or you?
Nope.
Do you need a photo of my pet?
It’s not required but I do love seeing your pets!
I live in a different country — does that matter?
Not at all.
Is my pet going to air my dirty laundry?
Animals are loving, not petty. They share what’s helpful — not what’s humiliating.
Does animal communication actually work?
Let me answer that the only way I know how…
Why I’m sure this is real (and why you don’t have to be):
Every animal I’ve ever loved has taught me something distinct.
But since beginning my animal communication training journey, my relationship with my own animals has shifted in a way that feels… undeniable.
Deeper. Softer. More mutual.
And when I connect with other people’s animals, they share things that land. Things that resonate. Things that click.
Like this session:
“Melissa was awesome — simply put. I had never done anything like this before, so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but she was spot on with so many things. From the moment we got to Waffles’ personality and she said ‘sausage factory’ — and even knew Waffles was part dachshund — I was like, yep, that’s my Waffles. And no, Waffles has never literally been to a sausage factory… but knowing her, that is her Disneyland.
Melissa was also on point with how Waffles was physically feeling based on what we’d done earlier that day, and the lesson Waffles is here to teach me. Even the things that didn’t fully align still helped me see the world through my dog’s eyes. I feel closer to my girl and know my little sausage even better.” — Amy & Waffles
And then there’s my own Bob who has the best life ever now thanks to both animal communication & energy healing. (If you’ve read that story, you know. If you haven’t, you can check it out here.)
The soul-level piece:
Have you ever noticed how your animal understands you without needing explanation?
How they comfort you when you’re falling apart. Celebrate when you’re joyful. Adjust to new homes, new humans, new lives.
Animals use their intuitive awareness to read the unspoken — the emotional weather of a room, the truth beneath words, the energy beneath action.
At a soul level, they’re listening all the time.
Animal communication isn’t about convincing you of anything.
It’s simply an invitation:
To remember what you already knew once.
To get curious.
And to trust that the love you feel with your animal runs deeper — and communicates more clearly — than language ever could.
💛
What if your animal has been communicating with you all along — just not in words?
If something came to mind as you read this, I’d genuinely love to hear it.
